Using a string to determine array index in javascript
In JavaScript, I have an array of strings
var wordlist = ["hello", "hi", "howdy", "greetings"];
and I have a string of text
var userInput = "welcome to StackOverflow";
I need a function that takes the wordlist, and given the userInput, returns the index in the wordlist for the string, like so:
var indexForUserInput = indexForUserInput(wordlist, userInput);
// returns 2
I know this isn't possible, because you can't use a string to determine an index. But I'm having trouble figuring out how to do this without converting the string to an array (which isn't possible) or having a separate array for strings.
Is there a way to do this without making wordlist an array?
A:
You can use Array#indexOf and
String#includes
for this:
var wordlist = ["hello", "hi", "howdy", "greetings"];
var userInput = "welcome to StackOverflow";
function indexForUserInput(wordlist, userInput){
return wordlist.indexOf(userInput);
}
console.log(indexForUserInput(wordlist, userInput));

The White House, a War Zone
My source noted: "This is a war zone, but it was as if that were not so. On the cusp of victory, this White House is as crazed as it was on the cusp of defeat, on the brink of becoming so politically anemic and craven that it would be cowed into surrender, willingly or otherwise." In a war zone, one sides wins or loses.
The war for the media has just begun. That is the difference between the two. The media war has just begun.#
